Why did you choose to pursue a career in technology?

I started my career in the technology industry, driven by a passion for innovation and the excitement of working with the latest technologies. The evolving nature of technology provided a challenging and stimulating work environment. Over time, my technical expertise and understanding of industry challenges led me to transition into an HR role. In this position, I leveraged my tech knowledge to design effective training programs and support the growth of tech professionals, making my career both dynamic and fulfilling. Witnessing the positive impact on individuals’ careers and the overall success of the organization has been deeply rewarding. My tech experience has been invaluable in my HR role, helping me utilize advanced HR technologies and communicate effectively with teams. Ultimately, my background enables me to create a supportive and productive work environment tailored to the unique needs of a tech company and its professionals.

Who has been your greatest professional mentor? What’s one thing you have learned from them?

I’ve been lucky to have had several mentors throughout my career. My first and greatest professional mentor has been Mr. D.K. Srivastava, the now retired Global HR Head at HCL Tech. He believed in me and encouraged me to establish the HR Shared Services Center for HCL-TSS, even back when I was unsure of my abilities. Among many invaluable lessons, he taught me the importance of continuous learning and adaptability. He always emphasized staying curious and open to new ideas. He taught me that challenges will always arise, but we must face them with grit and determination to achieve success. I embrace his “employee first” initiative, which is based on the principle that individuals are crucial to delivering value to customers and should be central to new strategies aimed at achieving higher growth.

What’s the biggest risk you took in your career? What was the reward?

The biggest risk I took in my career was transitioning from technology to HR without any prior experience in the field. This move proved to be incredibly rewarding as I discovered that HR was my true calling, and my skills and expertise were perfectly suited for this role. Over my 22-year career, this decision has led to numerous achievements and a wealth of knowledge and experience, making it a deeply fulfilling journey.

As a woman, what challenges have you faced in the technology industry? How have you overcome them?

One of the challenges I faced in the initial phase of my career was the need to overcompensate and put in double the effort to be equally heard and receive equal opportunities. This experience taught me to be resilient, determined, and to advocate strongly for myself and others. To overcome these challenges, I focused on building confidence in my abilities, sought mentorship for guidance and support, actively networked with colleagues and industry contacts, advocated for my ideas and contributions, and committed to continuous learning to stay updated on industry trends. These strategies helped me navigate obstacles and grow both personally and professionally.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? How do you apply it to your personal and professional life?

The best advice I’ve ever received, which I apply to both my personal and professional life, is to stay consistent and true to yourself. This means upholding your integrity and values while consistently delivering high-quality work professionally and being authentic and nurturing your personal relationships. This approach fosters trust, reliability, and a strong sense of self.

What’s one piece of advice you’d offer to younger women entering the industry?

Believe in yourself and your abilities; confidence is the key. Trust your skills, seek out mentors, and don’t be afraid to take on challenges. Your unique perspective and talents are valuable assets to any industry.

As a successful woman in technology, what’s one thing you do to pay it forward and advocate for other women in the field?

I believe in paying it forward through mentoring and coaching, as these are powerful ways to support and uplift others. By sharing my knowledge and experiences, I mentor and guide others in their career paths, help build their confidence and develop their skills.
