Free is Good! Maximizing Disk Free Space in z/OS Systems

While the hardware that underlies z/OS DASD has undergone massive change over the past decades, the z/OS view of disk space has remained largely unchanged since at least the 1990s. This means that z/OS installations that want to avoid production DASD error must insure that installation DASD are ‘clean’, with lots of free space and not fragmented into many small extents.
