Automate and optimize IBM Z storage management

As IBM Z data volumes continue to grow and experienced storage talent becomes harder to find, storage environments are becoming more complex—and more fragile. Manual processes, inconsistent standards, and space allocation failures can lead to production outages, costly reruns, and missed SLAs.

Organizations need a smarter, more automated approach to storage management—one that eliminates failures, enforces standards, and scales without increasing operational risk or overhead.

Syncsort™ Storage Management

Storage costs are rising fast for IBM Z customers, and much of that spending goes to waste due to manual processes, outdated controls, and inefficient storage utilization. At the same time, space allocation failures and policy drift increase the risk of production outages, job reruns, and missed SLAs. Syncsort™ Storage Management helps you fix that. With a suite of integrated tools, you can optimize disk usage, avoid costly storage errors, and monitor your environment in real time. It’s everything you need to reduce waste, improve performance, and get more from your IBM Z storage investment.

Eliminate production failures

Automatically recover from disk space allocation failures by dynamically matching application requests to available space—keeping jobs running without interruption.

Syncsort™ Space Recovery System

Recover Wasted Space. Prevent Failures. Keep Jobs Running.

Syncsort™ Space Recovery System (SRS) eliminates production failures caused by insufficient disk space. It uses advanced recovery logic to identify available space and match it to your application needs. Say goodbye to job reruns and failures from out-of-space errors. Whether you’re dealing with legacy JCL, fragmented volumes, or growing workloads, SRS automatically adjusts to keep jobs running without interruption.

Key Benefits:

  • Prevent Space Errors – Eliminate B37, D37, E37 abends, VSAM issues, and other space-related failures. SRS catches out-of-space conditions in real time and takes corrective action before they cause problems.
  • Full Dataset Support – Works across all dataset types—SMS and non-SMS, VSAM and non-VSAM, striped, extended-format, HFS, and more.
  • Smarter Dataset Management – Automatically reorganize multivolume datasets. When space is available, SRS can consolidate them back onto a single volume—no manual effort required.
  • Beyond DASD – Prevent issues like duplicate dataset names, NOT-CATLGD-2, and S837-08 tape errors. SRS can even reroute output datasets to available tape units.
  • Advanced Control with SRSE – The SRSE extension lets you fine-tune storage usage—redirect datasets to VIO, cap space requests, enforce RLSE parameters, optimize block sizes, and more.

Syncsort™ Allocation Control Center

Smarter Dataset Allocation for IBM Z

Syncsort™ Allocation Control Center (ACC) gives you full control over how datasets are created and where they’re placed—SMS-managed or not. Define flexible policies to enforce standards for dataset naming, device selection, volume assignment, and space usage, while enhancing DFSMS ACS routines.

Key Benefits:

  • Enforce Standards – ACC lets you apply consistent naming conventions and characteristics, even during transitions to new standards. With detailed SMF recording, logging, and simulation, it’s easy to track violations and adjust JCL automatically.
  • Control Placement – Direct datasets where you want them—send small tape files to DASD, build disk pools, migrate to new devices, or choose volumes based on performance or available space. ACC handles it without requiring changes to JCL or applications.
  • SMS Extensions – ACC Monarch includes tools to simplify system-managed storage for storage and DBAs:
    • “Keep-away” algorithms avoid using guaranteed-space classes for performance-sensitive datasets like DB2 tablespaces.
    • Real-time ACS tracing explains exactly how and why datasets are assigned to specific volumes.
