Data quality is crucial to business today. Without it, business leaders can’t make confident business decisions and business analysts can’t provide reliable intelligence to the executives and managers that rely on their work. Data governance is a key enabler of data quality as organizations look to improve trust in their data.

That’s what we learned from the 800+ respondents to the Survey of Data and Analytics Professionals created and conducted by Precisely and Drexel University’s LeBow Center for Business Analytics. Together, we’ve just published the findings of that study in our report “Data Professionals Speak: Trends in Data Governance and Data Quality.” Data professionals from companies of $500 million or more in revenue were invited to participate in the survey.  Their functional titles ranged from C-level executives including CDOs to business executives and managers, IT executives and managers, data stewards, data architects, data managers, and data analysts.

Of the data professionals surveyed, 64% report that their organizations have an ongoing data governance program, although most are in early stages of maturity. Large enterprises with 5,000+ employees are more likely to have mature data governance programs along with formal data governance training programs. Nonetheless, 63% say that cultural awareness and adoption are leading obstacles to data governance.
